"Neuschwanstein itself can be seen from below but is not recommend for anyone with a walking problem. I recommend Linderhof Palace and Hohenschwangau Castle viewing Neuschwanstein Castle from below on the outside, as it only has one finished floor with 6 rooms. There is not enough time to go inside all three castles in one day.

For security reasons, the palaces can only be visited during a 35-minute guided tour, so you can easily visit both castles in the same day. I highly recommend visiting both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau! In this post, I’ll give you a rundown of our day visiting Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.

Castle tickets must be purchased either online or at the Ticket Center. You cannot get them at the castles. You don’t have to tour both castles, but it would be a shame to miss the Hohenschwangau. It’s a nice tour with great preliminary information before visiting Neuschwanstein.

If you are already in the area it’s worth checking out the Hohenschwangau Castle as well! The adult tickets cost 13 EUR (14 USD) and the same conditions apply to them as for the tickets to Neuschwanstein Castle. If you plan to visit both castles you can purchase a combine ticket as well which is a bit cheaper than buying them individually.

Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein attract 1.5 million visitors each year. Needless to say, getting a ticket can be challenging. Online reservations work best, however, if you show up early enough, you can even get a ticket at the ticket counter. The problem is, that the ticket queue can quickly exceed the daily capacity.

Hohenschwangau Castle can currently only be visited as part of the special tour (approx. 45 minutes). Due to the length of the tour, the extended tours are generally not recommended for children under the age of 6. The visit to the museum is not time-bound. You can experience the museum at your own pace.

Close to the beautiful fairytale castle Neuschwanstein is the equally enchanting Hohenschwangau castle. At the end of the Romantische Straße, an epic route in the south of Germany, lies the beautiful Hohenschwangau. This castle is definitely worth your time, so read on further for the ins and outs for a visit.

Schloss Hohenschwangau sits above the same village as Schloss Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig’s grand fairytale castle. It is also just 45 km from Schloss Linderhof, his alpine retreat tucked away in the Bavarian Alps. I would highly recommend planning a visit to these while you’re in the area and on Germany’s Romantic Road.
