From 1066 – 1500 over 1,500 castles were built in England and Wales. Over this time the way they were built changed a great deal. Most of the reasons castles changed were because attackers found new ways of breaking into them. Castle defences needed to change to keep these attackers out.

How did castles change over time? The first castles were built in 1066 when the Normans took over England. They were called ‘Motte and Baliey’ castles and they were built to make a clear statement that the Normans were there to stay.

Although they took a longer time to build, they were larger and stronger and lasted a long time. Then, medieval people started to build shell keep castles which were made out of stones. It was round so it made the defenders easy to protect the castle since they could see in all directions and it was easier to organize defence.

Therefore, the main reason why castles changed over time was improved weapons. This is because the weapons were the most changed as there were many more weapons than defensive items back then. Foreigners learned about many weapons such as gun powder and bombs from Europeans.

There were many changes in castle construction due to the rapidly advancing military strategies. Castles were first mostly Motte and Bailey castles. These types of castles includes noble living quarters and barns, workshops etc. However, the castle was made of wood and could easily be burnt down.

From 1066 – 1500 over 1,500 castles were built in England and Wales. Over this time the way they were built changed a great deal. Most of the reasons castles changed were because attackers found new ways of breaking into them. Castle defences needed to change to keep these attackers out. The first of these castles were the Motte and Bailey Castles, however this soon became too weak.

Why was the Motte and Bailey castle vulnerable to attack? The biggest weakness was the material they were made of – wood. Like the story of the Three Little Pigs, wooden buildings can be burnt down by fire. Because the castles were not built to last, they were only a temporary solution. The castles would often rot as they were made from wood.

From the later 12th century, the focus of castle-building shifted from keeps to outer defences--gatehouses and enclosure walls. Gatehouses, the most vulnerable point of the castle, often became mini-castles in themselves, as at Dunstanburgh Castle, with towers and barbicans guarding their approaches, as at Helmsley Castle.

Castle designs have changed over history. This is because of changes in technology over time – as well as changes to the function and purpose of castles. The first castles were simply ‘mounds’ of earth, and medieval castle designs improved on these basics – adding ditches in the Motte & Bailey design.
