The original Conisbrough Castle was built by William De Warenne the 1st Earl of Surrey who was the son-in-law of William 1st or William the Conqueror as he is better known. Upon the third earls death in 1147 the castle passed to his daughter Isabel De Warenne as William had no male heirs, while the castle that still stands today was designed and built by Isabel's second husband Hamelin Plantagenet who was the illegitimate half-brother of Henry II.

Conisbrough Castle was built by Hamelin Plantagenet, half brother of Henry II in the 1170's. The magnificent keep and parts of the gatehouse and curtain wall remain. By late Tudor times it was owned by George Carey, 1st Lord Hunsdon, high steward of the Borough of Doncaster, cousin to Queen Elzabeth and Lord Chamberlain.

The Conisbrough Castle curtain walls are a rare early example of the use of solid round towers in castle defences. It is thought that they were built in the late 12th century, although building work may have begun soon after Hamelin Plantagenet received the title of earl in 1164.

From 1347 onwards he and his family occupied Conisbrough Castle. Conisbrough was an important Yorkist stronghold, and although it served largely as a second residence, it was occupied far more by the Yorks, than it had been by the de Warennes. In 1385 Edmund was made Duke of York by his nephew Richard II.

The first Conisbrough Castle was likely a wooden motte and bailey style architecture built around 1070 following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. It was constructed by William de Warenne, first Earl de Warenne and son-in-law of King William I. He served as one of the king’s original followers from Normandy in 1066.

Conisbrough Castle is contained within an artificial oval-shaped enclosure similar to one used as wapentake meeting-places at Gringley-on-the-Hill and East Markham, leading Malcolm Dolby to suppose the castle site may have once been the meeting-place of the Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake.
