Peterhof Palace was built in the early 18th century Peterhof Palace is a collection of palaces and gardens located near the second-biggest city in Russia, Saint Petersburg. The description makes it clear that it was built by Peter the Great (1672-1725), one of the most important figures in Russian history.

Peterhof palace was built by famous Peter the Great. It was his summer palace and he’s filled it in with paintings he brought from his European voyages. Although much smaller originally, both the palace and gardens were enlarged a bit by every new ruler. Peter the Great was inspired by some French palaces built by king Louis XIV.

Grand Palace The Grand Palace at Peterhof was designed to be the centerpiece of Peter the Great's "Russian Versaille". Around 1720, the Tsar gave up on attempts to establish his court at Strelna, mainly because the boggy ground proved entirely unsuitable for the canals and fountains that he envisioned.

Generations of Tsars poured fortunes into fashioning Peterhof into a fantasy-land. The original Grand Palace which Peter the Great built was constantly being expanded, till it reached over 300 meters long and included two towering cathedrals on either end of its façade.

Peter Alexeyevich – also known as Peter the Great – was Tsar of Russia from 1682-1721 when he founded the Russian Empire. He built Peterhof Palace in 1709 (which means Peter’s court in German). Around that time, from 1700 till 1721, Russia was at war with Sweden, and a decisive battle in Ukraine became the turning point of the whole war.

This building was built to the design of Nicholas Benois and on the money of baron Von Stiglitz, a famous Russian philanthropist, in the 1850’s. In its spacious halls summer balls for the nobility were held.

There was a section wich exhibited the extensive damage suffered by both palaces in the war. Not only from bombing and looting by the Germans, but because Peterhof in particular was turned into a defensive position, the parks of the tree were cut down, and the park was dug in and mined, but I don't know by what side.
