Tough choice, but we liked Windsor more than Hampton Court. Hampton Court Palace seemed big and kind of empty, but it had fun Tudor reinactors throughout the day. There seemed to be more things to see inside Windsor castle -- the staterooms, armor & weapons, flags, the dollhouse, etc.

It really depends on your family's interest. Windsor Castle is much more "castle-ey", and Hampton Court is a palace (i.e. not designed for defense but to look good). Windsor of course is where the Queen still lives. Hampton Court has connections to the Tudors and William and Mary.

While Windsor is a truly historic castle there is much less of it open than Hampton Court. And the latter provides a much more detailed picture of what life was like in a totally different age.

Hampton Court Palace is a lovely place to visit, but these two are quite different. Windsor is a Castle, a fortified structure with defense walls. Hampton Court Palace is more along the lines of a grand manor house. Windsor is the home of the Monarch.

Hampton Court also has nice parks and a Thames-side setting-a great maze and inside is not just your typical castle interior - to me both would delight you as your prerequisites. Do both if...
